Crystal grew up in a small town – Remer, Minnesota – where she graduated from Northland High School. She attended Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) where she earned an undergraduate degree with majors in English and Mass Communications and a Certificate in Publishing. She went on to earn her law degree at the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa, City.
Crystal is and has also been very involved in various organizations. During law school she: was President of the Black Law Student Association (BLSA); Bookstore Chair for the Equal Justice Foundation (EJF); Articles Editor for the Journal of Corporation Law; involved in AmeriCorps JD;
Co-founder of Street Law (later incorporated as Justice101).
While in law school, Crystal received a Law Opportunity Fellowship; received the Boyd Service Award from the College of Law and she also received the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award from the University of Iowa. She recently worked for five years at a large law firm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
As an attorney, Crystal sees every client issue as a puzzle. She focuses first on working with the client to establish realistic goals, then she goes to work. She admits she truly enjoys fixing things and the field of law is the ideal place for her.
